WGA Strike - Summary So Far

With Lost Season 4 just around the corner, many fans are speculating whether or not the Writers Guild of America’s strike will be over in time for the full 16 episodes to be produced before the television season is over.  Needless to say, we all hope that the strike will resolve ASAP, but the majority of Lost fans are in support of the strike, which does somehow make things easier.

If you know nothing about the strike here is a quick summary:

On November 5, 2007, the Writers Guild of America began striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producer. The WGA have gone on strike primarily over their residuals over new media distributions. Such as DVD sales and internet downloads.

Any attempts at a resolution of the problem have so far proved unsuccessful. However, in the past week the DGA (Director’s Guild of America), managed to create a deal with the AMPTP that was accepted. The WGA seem to have responded positively to this, as after weeks of a stalemate, the WGA began informal discussions with the AMPTP again. Thus restoring hope that the strike could be resolved soon!

What does this mean for Lost?

Well, if the strike is ended EXTREMELY soon, then the full 16 episode season may continue to air fully. However, if the strike goes on for much longer, only 8 of the 16 planned episodes will be aired starting January 31st in America and Canada. The final 8 episodes may not air at all this year depending on the WGA strike ending. However, this would be up to ABC to decide what to do.

All writers of Lost are naturally on strike as well, including some of Lost’s most important writers such as Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, who have been very supportive of the strike. The cast of Lost have also been supportive of the strike, Michael Emerson (Ben) has been stating he understands the WGA’s view in recent interviews, and Dominic Monoghan (Charlie) has been photographed on the picket lines.
